Routing is the behavior of transmitting information from the source through the network to the destination. On the way, at least one intermediate node is encountered. Routing is often compared to bridging, and to the careless, they seem to accomplish the same thing. The main difference between them is that bridging takes place in the second layer (link layer) of OSI reference protocol, while routing occurs in layer three (network layer). This difference makes them use different information in the process of transmitting information, thus completing their tasks in different ways.
The topic of routing has long appeared in the computer industry, but it did not achieve commercial success until the mid-1980s. The main reason for this time delay is that the network in the 1970s was very simple, and later large-scale networks were more common.
